“Sort Sol” – # 5

The marsh near Aventoft, October, 2014.

SORT SOL (Translated into English: Black Sun).  Very large numbers of migrational starlings gather in the marshlands in spring and autumn when they move between their winter grounds in southern Europe and their summer breeding grounds in Scandinavia.  Large flocks form huge formations in the sky just before they decide for a location to roost for the night.

Today’s photo illustrates why these large flocks of starlings have got their Danish name:

If the sun had been going down behind this flock – the sun would have been totally out of sight = black sun!
