Hovstien

June 14, 2011

This small road leads from Jelshøj (see my posts “Jelshøj” and Jelshøj (2) ) to Vilhelmsborg (see here – or my post here). It is an old and very small road. It’s still just asphalted on a smaller stretch of the road. The name Hovstien means “the path that is used by those who must villeinage work”. In this case peasants, who had to work for lord of the manor of Vilhelmsborg. Perhaps this small road did not always look so idyllic for these peasants on their way to forced slave labor for the lord of the manor?!

If you saw my post “White crossroads”  (January 27, 2011) it is Hovstien that is crossing my (and the red cyclist’s) way. The road-cross is not far behind where I am standing taking this photo.

Yes, I did not have that feeling when I was there meeting the red cyclist in winter 🙂

That is so interesting, Truels. I would’ve just thought that this was a rather pretty and scenic road, but knowing a bit about the history has added a different dimension. I like that. Do you many such roads in your area?

In fact you will find many roads or paths in Denmark called Hov-stien or Hov-vejen. Because all peasants were poor at that time and did not own the land, they cultivated. Therefore they had to work for the lord, who owned the land, with slave labor as payment for land.
